Lee A. Walters

Lee A. Walters, 88, of West Lafayette, formerly of Williamsport, passed away on March 10, 2010 at University Place, West Lafayette, IN. He was born June 7, 1921 in Lee, IN to Levi and Maggie Brandenburg Walters. He served in the Navy as a fire controlman aboard the destroyer, the USS Nields, during World War II. On March 12, 1949, he married Grace Marie May of Williamsport and she survives. He worked for the Warren County Farm Bureau Co-op and owned Walters and Coffing Sunoco service station in Attica. In 1962 Lee and Grace purchased a hardware business in Williamsport and operated it as Walters Ace Hardware for more than twenty years until their retirement. He also farmed in Warren County and enjoyed raising cattle. Lee was on the board of directors for Warren Federal Savings and Loan and on the board of advisors for the Montgomery Savings and Loan. Lee was a member of the Williamsport United Methodist Church. Surviving with his wife of 61 years are five children, Nancy (Bryan) Phillips of Fielding, UT, Cheryl Gramalia of Davidsonville, MD, Jackie (Lee) Elrod of Libertyville, IL, Linda (Joseph) Leuck of Noblesville, IN, and Craig (Christy) Walters of Williamsport; fourteen grandchildren, Wolf, Brandon, Jeremiah, and Gabriel Phillips, Tierra Phillips Wakefield, Andrew and Allison Tubbs; Lauren Elrod Edwards and Taylor Elrod; Callie, Cara, and Connor Leuck; Jennifer and Galen Walters. Also surviving are four great-grandchildren, Levi, Madeleine, Genevieve, and Lucas Phillips; three sisters, Laura Griffin of Wolcott, Nellie Shide of Rensselaer, and Marguerite Budreau of Monticello; in-laws Mary Schlosser, Juanita Kane, James May, and Beulah May of Williamsport, and Lucy Cowgill of Scottsdale, AZ; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and five sisters. Lee was known for his sharp wit and keen sense of humor. He never met a stranger. He was devoted to his family, working long hours to provide for them. While never having educational opportunities himself, he was a staunch advocate for learning, a value he instilled in his children along with his strong work ethic. The family sincerely expresses gratitude to the staff at University Place for the kind, constant, unwavering care and friendship given to Lee during his five year residency there. A memorial service will be held in the Great Room of University Place, 1700 Lindberg Road, West Lafayette at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 14, 2010 with Chaplain Robert Fish officiating.
