Mary Charlotte Twiddy

April 16, 1943 - January 4, 2021

Mary Charlotte (Schmidt) Twiddy passed away January 4, 2021 surrounded by family that loved her deeply. Born April 16, 1943 in Kansas City, Missouri to Wilhelm and Frances Schmidt. In 1961 she graduated from Raytown High School in Kansas City, MO. Mary attended Purdue University where she received her degree in Elementary Education in 1965 and her Masters in Special Education in 1968. A first grade class in Chesterton, IN. was Mary’s first teaching assignment. She then taught for the Lafayette School Corporation at Miller Elementary School. When her children were older, she was a substitute teacher at many local schools. After substitute teaching, she worked for the GLASS program at West Lafayette High School as a classroom aide. In 1966, she married her soul mate and best friend Donald Twiddy. Mary was Don’s partner in various entrepreneurial ventures. Nothing brought Mary more joy than her family beginning with the birth of her son Scott and daughter Becky. She was very involved in all her children’s activities. She would always be a parent volunteer in their classrooms, field trips and especially loved watching them play in their various sporting events. As her children became parents, she loved being Gram to her grandchildren. A title she took great pride and joy becoming. She spoiled all four of them tremendously! Mary enjoyed traveling to many different places with her family. For many years when the weather was warm, she could be found working in the yard or tending to the many flowerbeds, somehow always ending up with poison ivy. Mary was a loyal and devoted friend to many and cherished each of them. Mary enjoyed her monthly bridge game, meetings and for many years the Gourmet Club and caroling parties. Mary was a member of: Tri Kappa, Honorary Member of Sigma Kappa, PEO Sisterhood, Trinity United Methodist Church, Social Service Organization and a lifetime member of the John Purdue Club. Mary is survived by her husband Don. Children Scott Twiddy (Paige) and Becky Hayes (Rob). Grandchildren Kendall and Spencer Twiddy and Bradley and Alyssa Hayes. Nephews Owen and Bill Hildreth. Niece Ann Lynch. She is proceeded in death by her parents, and her sister Beverly. The family plans to host a celebration of life at a future date when family and friends can safely gather. Mary will be laid to rest at Grand View Cemetery in a private service surrounded by family.
